Gillian Anderson shows off ’80s-style curls at Cannes Film Festival

Sex Education star Gillian Anderson smiled behind a bouncy curly blowout during a Cannes Film Festival photocall.

The X Files actress was photographed on Wednesday in a beige floral Miu Miu midi-dress complimented by her blonde ’80s hair do.

The 57-year old, who strutted down the Miu Miu catwalk on the final day of Paris Fashion Week in March, typically attends industry events wearing her hair straight or in a bun, with her new curls standing out as a notable departure from her signature look.

Anderson also posed for photographs alongside her Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma co-star, Hacks actress Hannah Einbinder, and filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun.

Einbinder, who won her first Emmy award last year for best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as Ava Daniels in the HBO series, attended the photocall in a black high-neck sleeveless handkerchief midi dress with black thong sandalled heels.

Director Schoenbrun wore a star-cutout black long-sleeve midi bodycon dress with black lace-up flats.

The film, which premieres at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night, follows a queer director (Einbinder) tasked with making the sequel to a slasher zombie franchise.

However, as she seeks to include a cameo from the film’s original star (Anderson) she is sent on a journey of obsession that becomes more dangerous and surreal than she ever could have anticipated.

Anderson is known for playing sex therapist Jean Milburn in Netflix’s Sex Education as well as for starring in The Crown in which she portrayed Margaret Thatcher, a role which landed her the outstanding supporting actress in a drama series Emmy award in 2021.

The X-Files actress also starred in the 2024 biopic The Salt Path alongside Harry Potter’s Jason Isaacs, and in 2025 series Trespasses.

The actress was also behind the number one Sunday Times bestseller, Want: Sexual Fantasies By Anonymous, after asking women to write to her anonymously about their sexual desires in 2023.

The collection of essays was published in September 2024 and went on to receive two nominations at the 2025 British Book Awards with Anderson announcing last year that she would publish a second volume.
