Gillian Anderson speaks out after confronting fans over ‘distracting’ theatre habit in viral video

Gillian Anderson asked people not to “say anything negative” about a group of fans after she was filmed confronting them for repeatedly sitting in the front row of her West End show.

Anderson, who is currently starring in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, was filmed asking a group of fans at the stage door to stop sitting in the front row as it was “so distracting”. She continued: “You can’t come 20 times and sit in the front row, it’ll drive me mad.”

After the video went viral and sparked debate online over fan theatre etiquette, Anderson took to X to address the situation.

“Hi everyone, just to say – the video doing the rounds is me talking with women I go back over 20 years with,” Anderson tweeted on Sunday (4 October). “Please don’t say anything negative to or about them.”

“We’re thrilled to be doing this show, but for people in the front row, please be aware that in such an intimate venue, we can all see you,” she continued.

“Sometimes, it can be a tad distracting! That’s all. All good.”

The play is staged in the round, with the audience seated around the actors rather than facing a conventional stage.

The intimate 600-seat theatre puts Anderson and her co-stars metres from the audience, meaning performers can easily see people in the front rows throughout the show.

Anderson ended her post: “On with the show and love to everyone and thank you to all of those coming.”

The video in question was filmed outside the theatre’s stage door after a performance on Saturday, as Anderson stopped to meet fans and sign autographs. The women she is speaking to are not visible in the footage as Anderson appears to recognise them and, while signing autographs, tells them they cannot keep sitting in the front row.

“You guys cannot sit in the front row. I do not care, you cannot sit in the front row. It’s so distracting,” she says. “You can’t come 20 times and sit in the front row, it’ll drive me mad.”

The women can be heard replying “I know” and “I’m sorry”.

The video quickly spread across social media and fans discussed whether or not Anderson was entitled to object to fans repeatedly buying front-row seats.

“Some of you are so parasocial with this Gillian play you are actually turning into real life STALKERS. Like, no it is not normal to go to a play and wait for the celebrity outside for 36297 nights in a row! It gets to a point, you guys have no boundaries,” one person wrote on X.

“If a celebrity said this to me, I’d re-evaluate my entire life and immediately go into hiding,” another person said in a Reddit discussion about the video.

Others felt differently. “If the person isn’t harming Gillian in any way shape or form, I really don’t think she can tell them not to come anymore,” one person wrote on X. “She doesn’t have to interact with them.”

There has been a series of complaints from actors this year about poor theatre etiquette from fans.

In June, Rosamund Pike returned to the stage after a performance of Suzie Miller’s Inter Alia at Wyndham’s Theatre in London to address an audience member who had been texting during an emotionally significant scene. “Somebody was texting in this part,” she said, before adding, “Maybe it was very important, and maybe you’re a doctor, and you’re saving someone’s life, and I hope you are, but we do see these, we do feel them.”

Cate Blanchett made a similar appeal after a performance of Electra/Persona at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton Theatre in September, telling fans during the curtain call that recording the show “spoils it for the next group of people who come in and are present with us”.

The Independent’s Alice Saville gave Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? five stars in her review, writing that Anderson was “magnificent as a drunken housewife who feeds on attention and drama like a wasp sucking up spilt wine”.
