2023 is the year of the Water Rabbit, starting from 22nd January, 2023 (Chinese New Year). The sign of Rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity in Chinese culture. 2023 is predicted be a year of hope and spreading hope is precisely what Persatuan Kebajikan Mesra Murni Sungai Petani (PKMMSPK) does during every festive season.
Embracing humanity beyond race, religion and creed as it's main tenet of reaching out. The Indian-based NGO from Sungai Petani spreads it's arms to everyone regardless of their beliefs in the hope to cheer and bring joy to the destitute and needy. Hope for a group of unfortunate Chinese community in Sungai Petani certainly came early when they were treated in a simple gathering at the club house and presented with food baskets and a small token to kickstart their Chinese New Year celebration. The gathering aimed to bring a glimmer of hope and smile amongst the needy who were mostly senior citizens and wheelchair bound. Some inmates of an old folks home nearby were not forgotten and invited for the celebration so as not to leave them aggrieved in confinement during this celebratory period. The Chairman of PKMMSPK, Mr. S. Saravanan and the club's 15 strong members hold such festive gatherings regularly as their foremost activity. The members strongly believe the destitute should not lose hope in their times of adversity and it's their social obligation to reach out to them.
Besides, the club also provides household, educational and medical assistance to people who in need amongst their neighborhood. It's PKMMSPK fervent hope that this Chinese New Year, charity will prevail and everyone will not lose hope when celebrating for the Rabbit year.
