‘I’ve seen otters around Mid Valley before too. It’s been more than a year since I last saw them there. Glad to see them back again!’

A VIDEO of several otters swimming in the Sungai Klang near Mid Valley Megamall has gone viral, with many Malaysian netizens celebrating what they see as a hopeful sign of improving river conditions.

The clip, shared on Threads, showed a small group of otters frolicking happily in the river.

However, the post unintentionally sparked laughter online after the user mistakenly referred to the animals as “oysters”.

“Whoa, there are oysters in the Sungai Klang in front of Mid Valley. That means the river must already be clean,” the user wrote.

The mix-up quickly became part of the viral moment, with many commenters gently pointing out that the animals were actually otters, or memerang in Bahasa Melayu.

“I’ve seen otters around Mid Valley before too. It’s been more than a year since I last saw them there. Glad to see them back again!” one user commented.

Another joked: “I was racking my brain trying to think of what oyster was called, then I saw the comments, YESSS OTTER!”

Others said the sighting was encouraging, with one commenter writing that it was “peak happiness” to see the river clean enough to attract otters and people stopping to watch them play.

Some even hoped the otters would help reduce the population of invasive suckermouth catfish, commonly known as ikan bandaraya, in Sungai Klang.
