Could a Glee reboot really be in the works?
Both the Fox show’s co-creator Ryan Murphy and star Lea Michele have spoken about the potential for a reboot in recent months, sparkling a flurry of speculation as to whether it could actually happen.
At a recent New York Fashion Week event, Michele told E! News she “loves Glee” and that it “holds such a special place in my heart,” adding, “I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
Now, Murphy’s longtime collaborator and Glee co-creator Ian Brennan has weighed in, speaking to The Independent at the premiere of the collaborators’ new Netflix show Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story about the potential for a reunion.
“I'll say this: I would follow both of them to a Glee reboot. And that’s all I can say,” Brennan said before adding, “Watch this space.”
Brennan, Murphy, and Brad Falchuk co-created the hit musical series about the trials and tribulations of high school glee club New Directions. The show aired from 2009 to 2015 on Fox, winning six Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes.
In addition to Michele, Glee starred Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Dianna Agron, Kevin McHale and Amber Riley, along with late actors Cory Monteith, Mark Salling, and Naya Rivera.
The show wasn’t without its flaws, as several controversies emerged during and after filming, including accusations that Michele bullied other cast members. She issued a public apology for her actions.
Speaking about the show and its legacy, as well as the potential for a reboot, Murphy told People in July, “That show is interesting because it’s come back around. So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.’
“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ So yeah, I love that show and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people,” he continued.
After their initial collaboration with Falchuk on Glee, Murphy and Brennan have continued to work closely together on Scream Queens, The Politician, and most recently the Monster series.
The fourth installment of that series, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, was released Thursday on Netflix.
Starring Ella Beatty, Billie Lourd, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps, the series is an adaptation of the true story of Lizzie Borden, the murder suspect who was tried and acquitted of killing her father and stepmother in the late 1800s.
