THE Malaysian government is taking proactive measures to ensure domestic oil supplies remain stable, including sourcing additional crude to meet national demand, following ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference after a special Cabinet meeting, Amir cautioned the public against spreading or acting on speculation regarding fuel availability, warning that it could create unnecessary negative consequences.
“As previously outlined by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia currently has sufficient oil reserves. However, this does not mean the government is not taking action to secure supplementary supplies,” he said.
The minister emphasised that efforts to acquire fresh oil supplies, replacing what is consumed domestically, are actively being pursued by Petronas and other Malaysian oil companies.
“Steps to obtain new supply to sustain our domestic needs are ongoing, and these measures are in place to ensure the rakyat are not affected by potential disruptions,” Amir Hamzah said, highlighting the government’s commitment to energy security amid regional instability.
His remarks come as countries worldwide respond to the Middle East conflict by tightening energy consumption and preparing contingency measures, reflecting the importance of strategic supply management.
