Villagers stage a protest.

Irked by the land acquisition notices sent to them by Gmada, residents of Durali village in Mohali announced a ban on the entry of government and Gmada offficials from Sunday.

Locals held a gathering, raised slogans, and pasted notices at public places in the village, banning the entry of Gmada and Puda officials.

They set the notices of land acquisition sent to them by Gmada on fire and stuck flex boards on the walls of the government school and at other places banning their entry.

Puadh Insaaf Morcha leaders Makhan Gigemajra and Kamaljit Badi; Malkit Singh, sarpanch, Durali; and Jagdeep Singh, Ranveer Singh, and Gurmeet Singh (all panches) said they had been struggling for the past six months but Gmada and the government were not listening to their demands.

They said that recently, they had gone to meet Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who had come for a Lok Milni at Saneta but they were not allowed to meet the chief minister. They said they have repeatedly submitted a memorandum to MLA Kulwant Singh and senior officials of GMADA but were not being heard.

The villagers said 249 acres of their land in Sector 101 of Mohali has already been acquired by Gmada for an industrial park. “Now, another 129 acres of land is being acquired in Sector 101 and 141 acres of land in Sector 103. All this land is also being acquired for an industrial park. Setting up factories in the entire area around the village will impact the health and environment and they will not allow their land to be acquired for industrial purposes at any cost," they said.

They said they have been demanding for long that their 270 acres of land which is now to be acquired should be converted from an industrial area to a residential area, but to no avail.

They demanded immediate withdrawal of the notices sent by Puda and Gmada to acquire their lands and said they will not give any land to Gmada at any cost.

Puadh Insaaf Morcha leaders said a meeting had also been called at Badi village at 4 pm on May 11 in which the next strategy will be drawn up to stop the acquisition of land.
