SEN. Bong Go urged the government on Friday to provide sustained support for the families of two Filipino seafarers killed in drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported that one Filipino seafarer was killed in an attack on July 6, while another died in a separate incident on July 19. One Filipino seafarer remains missing.
“I extend my condolences to the families of our two compatriots who died. We also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and the safety of our compatriot who has not yet been found,” Go said.
The DMW said that nine vessels carrying 139 Filipino seafarers were affected by the attacks. Of the total, 124 were reported safe and unharmed. Twelve sustained injuries, four of whom have returned to the Philippines, while the remaining eight continue to receive medical treatment overseas.
The affected vessels included bulk carriers and oil product tankers operating in or near ports and anchorages in southern Ukraine. Most sustained damage while docked, anchored, or shortly after departing port.
Go acknowledged the ongoing efforts of the DMW and concerned manning agencies in coordinating with the families of the affected seafarers and providing necessary assistance.
Go is among the authors and co-sponsors of the Republic Act that created the DMW by consolidating government offices handling overseas employment concerns to improve the delivery of services to overseas Filipino workers and their families.
“It is important to continue supporting our countrymen and their families. Information must be clear to them, and the assistance they need must be provided during this time,” he said.
Go acknowledged the sacrifices made by Filipino seafarers, who often work far from their families under difficult and dangerous conditions.
“It is important to have an agency focused on the welfare of our OFWs. In situations like this, quick coordination and continuous support for workers and their loved ones are essential,” he said.
