MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go reiterated the need to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness and ensure safer, more resilient temporary shelters as he extended assistance to more than a thousand families affected by flooding brought by the southwest monsoon or habagat in Bulacan.
The relief activity in Hagonoy, Bulacan was part of Go’s continuing efforts to assist communities affected by severe weather, addressing some of the immediate needs of families as they work to recover from prolonged flooding, restore their homes, and gradually return to normalcy.
"When disaster strikes, it is important to reach and assist affected families immediately. Even simple acts of help can make a big difference as they slowly recover and rebuild their lives," Go said during a video call with the beneficiaries.
"I know that you are going through a difficult time right now. Being affected by flooding is never easy, but we have God. Let us continue to pray and help one another," he added.
The flooding comes as weather systems continue to enhance the southwest monsoon affecting parts of Luzon and the Visayas.
In coordination with local officials in Hagonoy, the Malasakit Team distributed additional assistance to 1,000 beneficiaries, including shirts, and pens. Selected recipients also received shoes, and mobile phones, while food packs were likewise provided by the national government.
The initiative followed Go’s recent visit to Calumpit, Bulacan, on August 31, where he personally waded through floodwaters to check on residents dealing with prolonged flooding caused by the habagat.
Go, however, said disaster response must not end with the distribution of relief goods after calamity strikes.
He emphasized the importance of investing in preparedness and building safer, permanent facilities where families can seek refuge when communities are threatened by floods, typhoons, earthquakes, and other disasters.
"We should not wait for a disaster to happen before taking action. We must be prepared even before calamity strikes. We need safe and well-equipped evacuation centers where our fellow countrymen can seek shelter," Go said.
