It seems that Malaysia is finally set to introduce a new set of laws targeting artificial intelligence as early as 2027, making the government the latest among nations increasing regulations against the technology amidst concerns over misuse and security risks.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated in parliament today that the government is currently working to draft a new Bill that would adopt a risk-based approach towards artificial intelligence systems, and that the Bill will be a cross-sectoral framework which will complement existing laws.
“The level of controls and obligations will be assessed according to the potential harm of the AI system itself, rather than classifying risks based solely on the industry. This is because the use of AI in this context requires stricter regulation due its direct impact on safety, fundamental rights and the well-being of individuals,” – Gobind Singh Deo, in Parliament
The Digital Minister added that the government is aware of the impact technologies like artificial intelligence can have on the national economy, administration and its society, and that they will continue to prioritise our safety. He noted that safety controls, testing, monitoring, human oversight and response mechanisms must be strengthened before they can be deployed and used.
Gobind’s statement came in response to Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismal, who questioned the government’s stance on the ongoing calls for slower AI development and whether the government had any plans to enact an AI Act to regulate these technologies.
