SMALL and medium enterprises (SMEs) continue to trail larger companies in embracing digital transformation, according to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, who called for intensified efforts to close the gap.

Speaking at the CTOS SME Biz Day 2025, Gobind said the Ministry of Digital is ramping up its support through various initiatives, including the recently launched Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI) by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), aimed at helping SMEs speed up their digital adoption.

"The MADANI Government has also set aside RM50 million for digital matching grants for SMEs and digital grants for vendors," he said.

Gobind added that global tech firms with a strong presence in Malaysia, such as Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud, are working closely with the government to assist SMEs via several dedicated programmes.

He also stressed that SMEs remain a top priority as the country navigates complex geopolitical and trade challenges, highlighting that funds have been earmarked to support these businesses.

"The government's initiatives have always been designed to provide SMEs with the resources, knowledge, and support they need to navigate the digital landscape effectively," he said.

"Our vision is to create a digitally empowered Malaysia – where every business, regardless of size, can thrive in our national digital ecosystem. We are committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation, digital adoption, and ultimately, building up Malaysia as a strong digital nation."

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM1 billion in government guarantees under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme to help SMEs affected by the recent United States tariff measures secure commercial loans.

A further RM50 million will be channelled through the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) to support SME efforts in exploring new markets via trade expos, exhibitions, and business matching sessions with international buyers. - May 6, 2025
