DAP chairman Gobind Singh Deo has urged the police to take immediate action against those accused of desecrating religious symbols.
Gobind, who is also the Digital Minister, said the matter was raised in a Cabinet meeting yesterday, and the government has a clear stance that enforcement agencies must ensure follow-up action is taken.
"I urge the Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, to take immediate steps to identify and bring those responsible for the act of desecrating religious symbols to justice.
"Malaysia must never fall into a state of lawlessness or racial tension.
"The police must act now to restore public confidence and ensure that the peace we have built is not threatened by those who are trying to divide society," he said in a statement today.
Gobind said the task of maintaining public order is a fundamental responsibility of the police that cannot be compromised.
"However, recently, we have witnessed a lack of action against those who spread racial hatred, thus triggering incidents that directly threaten the stability of the country," he said.
He also referred to a recent case involving the insulting of the Quran and described the swift action of the authorities in prosecuting the parties involved as something appropriate and an example that such acts will not be tolerated.
Gobind said the same swift action should be taken against any act involving Soolam, a sacred symbol of the Hindu community.
"I urge the police to address the grave concerns of the community and take appropriate action immediately.
"Failure to act in cases like this can increase racial tensions.
"We must maintain racial harmony and unity, and the only way to do this is by upholding and enforcing the law without fear or favour," he said. – March 12, 2026
