Gangtok (Sikkim) [India], May 11: A quiet but significant transformation is taking shape at MIT University Sikkim, where Vice Chancellor Dr Deepak Kher is using more than 36 years of teaching, research and administrative experience to position the institution among the credible higher education centres of North-East India. For students and parents weighing university choices in 2026, the leadership behind a campus has become as important as its infrastructure. Dr Kher’s academic record is uncommon for its sustained excellence. He completed his B.Sc. (Agriculture) from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, followed by an M.Sc. in Soil Science from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, where he studied as an ICAR Research Fellow. His doctoral degree in Soil Science and Water Management came from CSK Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Palampur, where he was awarded the HPKV Gold Medal for standing first in the doctoral programme — all three degrees secured in First Division.

His professional journey began in 1988 at SKUAST-Kashmir as Assistant Professor. Over the decades, he advanced through positions including Associate Professor, Senior Scientist, Associate Director Research, Officiating Director Research, and Director Planning & Monitoring at SKUAST-Jammu, a role he held for close to a decade. Before moving to MIT University Sikkim, he served as Dean, School of Agriculture at SAGE University, Bhopal, and held senior academic positions at Oriental University and Mandsaur University.

Records associated with his tenure show he coordinated more than 225 externally funded research projects and helped mobilise nearly ₹140 crore for institutional development during his years at SKUAST-Jammu. He has authored two books, published over 105 research papers, and produced 10 technical bulletins, alongside book chapters and conference papers. He has also guided 20+ research scholars and served as External Examiner at PAU Ludhiana, GNDU Amritsar, and HPKV Palampur.

His national recognitions include the HPKV Gold Medal, the Best Environmental Scientist Award by the Asian Biological Society, the Best Dean Award, and the Best Teacher Award.

People familiar with the university’s planning say Dr Kher’s approach at MIT University Sikkim has been measured rather than promotional. The focus, according to officials, is on selective admissions, classroom-to-industry connect, structured internships, and early employability — areas aligned with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 guidelines. The university has also secured recognition under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, strengthening its academic credibility.

To bring global academic exposure, the university is identifying guest professors from the US and UK for online lectures, and is integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into classrooms and study systems. Its syllabus follows NAAC-level quality benchmarks, with strong focus on industry-led training workshops and live projects.

The university currently offers programmes in management, computer applications, commerce, hospitality, agriculture, law, and allied professional fields, with affordable annual fees between ₹60,000 and ₹1.5 lakh. Education analysts tracking the North-East region say Sikkim’s peaceful environment, improving connectivity, and growing academic infrastructure are gradually drawing students from across India.
