Google has announced the launch of Project Berita and Project Sigma 2.0, two new initiatives aimed at helping Malaysian news organisations adapt to changing audience habits, growing AI adoption and evolving newsroom skills requirements.
Unveiled at National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026 in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Majlis Media Malaysia (MMM), Project Sigma 2.0 will support up to 20 small and medium-sized news organisations across Malaysia. The program provides participating publishers with frameworks, tools and consulting support to help them better engage younger audiences, particularly the Gen Z, which makes up around 26% of Malaysia’s population.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the government remains committed to ensuring media practitioners have opportunities to develop skills in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. According to Fahmi, the govertnment will support Project Sigma 2.0 as a platform to equip media professionals with the tools, insights and competencies needed to adapt to the digital landscape while using AI responsibly.

Google and MMM also introduced Project Berita, a new initiative focused on addressing skills and capacity gaps within Malaysia’s journalism industry as AI becomes increasingly integrated into newsroom operations.
Developed following consultations with industry stakeholders, Project Berita will offer training programmes targeted at different stages of media careers. For students and aspiring journalists, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia will expand its #AiYOH (AI Literacy Empowerment Workshop) programme to universities nationwide. Meanwhile, mid-career journalists and senior newsroom leaders will receive specialised AI and newsroom management training through the Malaysian Press Institute.
Google added that the initiatives are intended to help strengthen newsroom capabilities and prepare Malaysia’s media ecosystem for an AI-driven future.
