If you’re under 18 in Malaysia, your Google experience is about to get a little more protected, whether you ask for it or not, as the service giant is expanding its age assurance measures to the country, following earlier rollouts in Singapore, the US, and other markets. The goal is to recognize who is over or under 18 so younger users get age-appropriate experiences, which Google describes as one part of its broader commitment to keeping Malaysians safe online.

For users Google infers to be under 18, existing enhanced protections turn on automatically. SafeSearch filtering is enabled by default to screen out explicit content, and mature material gets blocked on products like Play and Gemini. Personalized ads are prohibited, and location timelines on Maps are disabled. On YouTube, Digital Wellbeing tools like take-a-break and time-for-bed reminders switch on, and new safeguards for content recommendations limit repetitive viewing of certain kinds of content.

If the model thinks you might be younger than 18, you’ll hear about it by email and while using Google products. The notifications explain how your settings have changed to provide default account protections, and they walk through how to fix things if the model got it wrong. Adults who are incorrectly flagged can verify their age by uploading a photo of a government ID or a selfie, which lets them manage those settings themselves again.

Google calls the Malaysian rollout an important step toward age-appropriate, privacy-preserving experiences across its platforms.
