Google has introduced its latest piece of hardware, the Googlebook. According to Google, unlike your usual Chromebook, this is a laptop designed for uh, Gemini Intelligence. It sounds a little close to Apple Intelligence, but there’s no Siri here; it’s all Gemini.

The tech giant claims that the Googlebook is a new category of laptops, with Gemini at its core. What operating system it actually runs though is a mystery to both you and me; while rumours previously hinted at something called Aluminium OS, that has been confirmed to just be its codename, not the official name.

What we do know though is that it’s built on the Android stack, with Chrome for web browsing and support for Android apps. You’ll be able to sync it with your Android smartphone too for direct file access and even run apps from your smartphone on your Googlebook. We’re not sure if it’s just Phone Mirroring a la MacOS and iPhone, but they do show that you won’t have to find your phone to do your Duolingo.

Even the cursor has AI built into it. Google says that the Googlebook features a Magic Pointer, which will give you a contextual suggestion when you wiggle your cursor and point it on something. Then there’s a new Create a Widget tool, where you can prompt AI to make you a custom dashboard for your assortment of flights, hotel information and restaurant bookings.

Now in case you were wondering, wasn’t there already a premium Chromebook from Google? Well yes, there was the Pixelbook, but it seems that this Googlebook ecosystem won’t actually be made by them.

Instead, Google says that they’re working with industry partners such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo to build these new Googlebooks, similar to how the Chromebook ecosystem works right now. They will be made with premium materials, and will come in a variety of shapes and sizes too. You can expect to see the first Googlebook debut later this fall.
