GOP donor criticizes Trump’s proposed $5,000 ‘bread and circus bribe’

  • A prominent Republican donor has criticized Trump’s proposed $5,000 checks in the latest blowback following Trump’s vow at the GOP midterm convention on Wednesday night.
  • Joe Londsdale, a GOP donor and activist, wrote on X, “I am hugely in favor of winning the midterms, and love much about this (administration) but am strongly against bread and circus bribes.”
  • Taking the stage for the opening night of his unusual midterms convention, Trump told voters: “If Republicans win both the House and the Senate, because of our tremendous economic success, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000.”
  • Marc Goldwein, the senior policy director at the think tank Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, said Trump has no authority to send money to Americans without approval from Congress and pointed to the nation’s $40 trillion in debt.
  • “The idea that we’ve had fiscal success is backwards and bordering on laughable,” he said. “We don’t have surpluses to give away.”
