In a recent announcement at the Administrative and Diplomatic Officers Alumni dinner in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reassured retired civil servants that the government is committed to topping up pension amounts to ensure they are not less than the current rates.
Addressing concerns stemming from a June 27 Federal Court decision that nullified the Pensions Adjustment (Amendment) Act 2013, Anwar emphasized the government's decision to uphold pension amounts for civil servants who retired both before and after 2013. Despite the legal setback, the government chose to maintain the original pension amounts for July and derivative pensions.
Anwar acknowledged the discrepancy between current pension amounts and the original figures, assuring retirees that the difference would be covered through a special aid program known as Special Recognition for Retirees (PKKP). This initiative aims to ensure that pensioners receive the same amount as in June 2023.
During the dinner, Alumni PTD president Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali expressed concern about potential decreases in pension amounts in the upcoming year following the Federal Court's decision. Anwar responded by highlighting the government's commitment to thoroughly examine the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), acknowledging that this process would take time.
Anwar emphasized that salary adjustments, particularly those related to the SSPA, had not been reviewed for 11 years. He attributed this delay to political challenges but assured attendees that a committee was now in place to address salary and allowance schemes for civil servants.
"It should be reviewed every 10 years, but because there is non-stop politicking going on, there was no opportunity to think about civil servants' issues. But now, there is a committee to review the salary and allowance scheme for civil servants, Insya Allah, this will be resolved," he said.
In a gesture of support, the prime minister also approved an allocation of RM500,000 to Alumni PTD during the event. This funding is intended to support the association's activities in strengthening public administration and services.
In summary, the government's commitment to safeguarding pension amounts for retired civil servants was reiterated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who assured that any shortfalls would be addressed through the PKKP program. Additionally, plans for a comprehensive review of the SSPA underscore the government's dedication to addressing long-standing issues affecting civil servants' salaries and allowances. The approved funding for Alumni PTD further demonstrates the government's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving public administration and services.
