Government extends electricity subsidy protection to 800 kWh until year-end

THE government is expanding electricity bill protection to domestic consumers with usage of up to 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month, raising the limit from the previous 600 kWh.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that this subsidy enhancement applies to electricity consumption from September through to December 31, 2026.

"This measure is being taken as an immediate step to address the cost-of-living pressures currently faced by the people," he said in a statement today.

Under this measure, domestic consumers using up to 800 kWh of electricity per month will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA), Retail Charges, and Sales and Service Tax (SST).

According to Anwar, recent hazy conditions and hotter weather have driven up electricity consumption for some households.

This situation caused their monthly usage to exceed the 600 kWh threshold, resulting in unusually high bills.

He also expressed his appreciation to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), and the Energy Commission for enabling the immediate implementation of this measure.

"The MADANI Government will continue to closely monitor fuel cost trends and current energy market conditions," he added.

This monitoring ensures that any decisions regarding electricity tariffs take into account the people's affordability, the security of electricity supply, and the sustainability of the national energy sector. – September 17, 2026
