In a bid to safeguard the interests of its citizens and maintain market fairness, the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) and the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry have been directed to initiate contact with Umno Youth chief, Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh. The purpose of this outreach is to explore and gather information related to the purported existence of a rice cartel, which has recently come under scrutiny.

Acting minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who is at the helm of these investigative efforts, emphasized the gravity of the allegations and the government's commitment to addressing them promptly. He affirmed that the ministry takes any complaints that affect the welfare of the people very seriously and extends an open invitation to all parties for their cooperation in this matter.

"The ministry's core mandate lies in the enforcement of specific aspects outlined in the Consumer Protection Act and the Trade Descriptions Act. However, when allegations of a rice cartel emerge, we can enlist the expertise of MyCC, which is vested with the authority to probe cartel activities in accordance with the Competition Act of 2010," Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali explained during a press conference, held following the conclusion of the Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (STDR3) Week and Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Using ICT Technology event at Kem Wawasan.

The controversy surrounding the alleged rice cartel burst into public awareness when Umno Youth chief Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh made claims earlier this week. According to him, this cartel has been surreptitiously marketing local rice as broken rice, resulting in inflated prices and financial burdens for consumers.

The investigation initiated by MyCC and the Ministry underscores the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring fair and transparent market practices. This move is expected to provide clarity on the veracity of the allegations, assuage public concerns, and hold accountable any parties involved in anticompetitive behavior.

Consumer protection and market integrity remain pivotal for the government, and this latest endeavor reflects its dedication to safeguarding the rights and interests of the Malaysian populace. As MyCC and the Ministry delve deeper into the alleged rice cartel, Malaysians can expect transparency and accountability to prevail, reinforcing trust in the country's economic ecosystem.
