Govt approves 48 new RE projects worth RM1.87 billion

THE Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has approved 48 new renewable energy (RE) projects with a combined generation capacity of 181.25 megawatts (MW), aiming to bolster Malaysia’s green energy transition and enhance supply security through a diversified RE portfolio.

In a statement today, PETRA said the projects – spanning biogas, biomass and small hydropower – were approved under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism administered by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia.

“The approved projects are expected to generate RM1.87 billion in investment and will begin supplying green electricity to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as early as 2028,” said the ministry.

The approvals follow an open e-bidding process launched from 15 January to 19 February 2025, offering a total quota of 190MW for biogas, biomass and small hydro projects. Out of 59 applications received, 48 met the technical and financial criteria set by the ministry.

This includes 20 biogas projects totalling 30.93MW, eight biomass projects with a combined capacity of 53.50MW, and 20 small hydro projects amounting to 96.82MW.

PETRA noted that the latest FiT initiative aligns with Malaysia’s goal to increase its RE share in national electricity generation to 70 per cent by 2050.

“Expanding the capacity of biogas, biomass and small hydro will not only diversify Malaysia’s renewable energy mix, but also contribute to a more secure and reliable electricity supply,” the ministry added..

PETRA expressed confidence that this wave of approvals under the FiT scheme will serve as a catalyst for a more dynamic and forward-looking RE industry, in line with the government’s Malaysia MADANI vision emphasising sustainability, innovation and shared prosperity. - July 18, 2025
