KUALA LUMPUR — As Malaysia gears up to host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his official visit this weekend, the government has issued a stern warning against any disruptions to public security.
At a press conference today, Unity Government spokesperson Datuk Fahmi Fadzil affirmed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining public order throughout the high-profile visit.
“The Prime Minister has firmly decided that no party will be allowed to provoke any form of security disturbance, especially with the arrival of state guests,” said Fahmi, who also serves as the Communications Minister. “Strict measures will be in place to ensure the safety of both the public and the dignitaries.”
Modi is scheduled to begin his two-day visit to Malaysia on Saturday, which will include bilateral talks with Anwar.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Wednesday that this will mark Modi’s third official visit to Malaysia. During his stay, he will engage with the Malaysian Indian community, as well as business and industry leaders.
The warning from the government follows concerns about an “illegal” rally involving houses of worship. Police have urged organisers not to use the event to incite or stir up religious, racial, or royal issues.
Dang Wangi District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam revealed that organisers had been met with authorities last Thursday to discuss avoiding sensitive rhetoric.
Zamri Vinoth, a key figure behind the rally, confirmed the assembly had been officially notified under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. He stated that 141 non-governmental organisations were expected to take part.
Zamri, who has previously faced 894 police reports over alleged comments offensive to the Hindu faith, remains a controversial figure in the rally's context.
Political parties, including the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP), have also expressed concern about the gathering.
The government’s position highlights its determination to preserve both public order and diplomatic protocol as Malaysia prepares for one of its most important foreign visits in recent months. - February 6, 2026
