The government may soon introduce a special mechanism that provides free tolls or discounts on tolls only to the B40 and M40 groups through the Central Database Hub (PADU).

This is among the expectations of the government after they ended free tolls in conjunction with festive holidays starting this year.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Federation of Malaysian Consumers’ Associations (FOMCA), Dr T Saravanan, shared that PADU could be used to ensure that only those who truly deserve benefits will receive it.

“With the announcement of a more targeted approach in providing free tolls, there are several expectations regarding the implementation of this measure,”

“One of them is that the government may introduce a special mechanism that provides free tolls or discounts only to low-income groups such as those in B40 and M40 groups,” he said.

Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, was reported to have said that a more targeted approach to helping Malaysians was discussed in a Cabinet meeting last year, and will be announced to the public soon.

Additionally, Saravanan believes that the government can consider providing toll discounts during off-peak hours to encourage traffic dispersion and more efficient use of highways, consequently reducing traffic congestion during festive seasons.

“Another approach expected is through the provision of digital travel incentives, such as toll vouchers or rebates that can be redeemed through government-recognised applications within a certain period,”

“This measure is expected to ensure that benefits are provided to those who really need it, thus avoiding waste of national resources and increasing efficiency in the management of the country’s highway system,” he added.
