Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old civil servant was fined RM5,000 in default six month’s jail for receiving a bribe of RM1,500 from a man as inducement not to take action against a complainant who have expired boat licence.

Jazul Abdullah, pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga, to an alternative that offered to him.

Jazul, as enforcement of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), had received the bribe from Leonard Lee Yin Leong, as a reward not to take action against the boat and the complainant for having expired boat licence.

He committed the offence at 7.30pm on March 17, 2021 at the parking lot at the Sabah Credit office in Alamesra, here.

The offence under Section 165 of the Penal Code provides for a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both, on conviction.

Jazul had on July 14, 2022 claimed trial to the original charge under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

Since he had admitted to the alternative charge, the original charge had been withdrawn.

MACC Prosecuting Officer Norsham Saharom appeared for the prosecution while Jazul was not represented. The accused paid the fine.
