THE Ministry of Transport is intensifying efforts to accelerate the opening of the Light Rail Transit Line 3, which will link Shah Alam with surrounding areas, in a bid to mitigate chronic traffic congestion across the Klang Valley.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to expand public transport options for commuters, particularly in one of the country’s busiest urban corridors.

However, he acknowledged that reducing congestion remains challenging amid a steady rise in private vehicle ownership.

“The Ministry will continue its efforts in the coming months to expedite the opening of the LRT3 line as a mitigation measure to provide more options for passengers.

“The line must undergo several stipulated tests before it can be opened to the public,” he said.

He was speaking at a press conference after officiating at a Chinese New Year gift distribution event for passengers of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad at KL Sentral.

More than 250 souvenir packs were distributed to Electric Train Service passengers during the ceremony, which was also attended by KTMB chairman Datuk Ahmad Redza Abdullah.

Loke noted that traffic congestion in the Klang Valley typically intensifies ahead of major festive periods, driven by increased social activity and last-minute shopping.

He added that Malaysia recorded vehicle sales of 820,000 units last year, making it one of the largest automotive markets in Southeast Asia — a trend that inevitably adds pressure to existing road networks.

The LRT3 project, once operational, is expected to improve connectivity between Shah Alam and key transit hubs, forming part of the government’s longer-term efforts to shift commuters towards rail-based transport and ease dependence on private vehicles. - February 14, 2026
