SHAH ALAM, July 6 - The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) is studying a proposal to use MyKad for the purchase of subsidised cooking oil.
Its deputy minister Datuk Fuziah Salleh said the proposal is under review due to limitations with MyKad readers, which now only support Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) transactions.
“We actually need a device that can read MyKad. The device used for SARA is only for SARA and STR recipients, so it cannot be used by the public who are not aid recipients to purchase subsidised cooking oil packets,” she said in response to a supplementary question from Cha Kee Chin (Harapan-Rasah) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Cha asked whether the new MyKad could be used in place of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme System (eCOSS) app to buy subsidised cooking oil.
Fuziah added that KPDN is proposing a new MyKad equipped with a Quick Response (QR) facility to overcome current limitations.
She said the upgraded MyKad would require a device capable of reading information stored on the card’s chip.
“Continuous engagement is being carried out with the National Registration Department and retailers to implement this proposal, but it is still in progress,” Fuziah added.
