The government has announced it will not completely abolish toll waivers but will instead offer a 50% discount on toll charges in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

Minister of Works Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi revealed that this decision would require the government to allocate approximately RM20.08 million as compensation to toll concessionaires. The discount will be available from 12.01am on 27 January 2025 until 11.59pm on 28 January 2025.

The reduced toll charges will only apply to Class 1 private vehicles and will exclude toll plazas at the nation’s borders, specifically the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas.

On Tuesday, Nanta announced that the government would no longer provide toll exemptions during festive seasons, opting instead for what he described as a “more targeted approach”. While he did not elaborate on this new strategy, he assured that further details would be disclosed in due course.

Nanta noted that ending toll waivers for festive periods would enable Putrajaya to save RM190 million annually. He highlighted that toll exemptions during the festive seasons in 2023 and 2024 had cost the government a total of RM356.18 million.
