Govt to detail follow-up actions on US tariffs next week, says Fahmi

The government will detail follow-up actions on the United States tariffs at the National Geo-economic Action Centre (NGCC) meeting next Monday.

Unity government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the Cabinet discussed the matter at its meeting today.

Fahmi said any decision would also be subject to the outcome of the Special Meeting of ASEAN Economic Ministers to be held tomorrow, as well as discussions between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and several leaders of other ASEAN countries.

"Therefore, on Monday we will detail this matter before sending a delegation to Washington DC for the purpose of diplomacy and trade discussions with the US," he said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting press conference today.

He said that so far, no date (for the delegation's visit) has been set, but it is subject to the decision and approval of Cabinet.

"The exact date cannot be mentioned yet," said Fahmi.

He said that the meeting next Monday is part of the government's proactive steps as the ASEAN Chair.

"All issues and perspectives faced by ASEAN countries ... we intend to hold discussions as best as possible," he said.

Trump had earlier announced a reciprocal tariff of 24 percent on imports from Malaysia in the wave of the global trade war.

The US President also announced high reciprocal tariffs against China of 34 percent, the European Union (20 percent), Vietnam (46 percent), Sri Lanka (44 percent), Cambodia (49 percent), Laos (48 percent), and Myanmar (44 percent). - April 9, 2025
