Govt to ensure MyKad not misused following RON95 price adjustment

THE Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) will step up surveillance at petrol stations to prevent subsidy leakage and the potential misuse of MyKad following the recent adjustment in RON95 fuel prices.

Deputy Minister Datuk Fuziah Salleh said station operators would be reminded of their responsibility to ensure that identification cards (MyKad) are not misused in the purchase of subsidised petrol.

"Previously, petrol stations were prohibited from selling RON95 to foreign-registered vehicles," she said.

"(Going forward) if identity cards are used, we will remind station owners to remain vigilant, and we may need to monitor more closely to ensure the identity cards are not misused," she told reporters at the closing ceremony of the TikTok Shop Summit 2025, held here today.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim unveiled several key initiatives under the government’s MADANI framework as a gesture of appreciation to the people.

Among the measures announced were a one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) scheme, a deferment of toll rate hikes on ten expressways, and a subsidised RON95 petrol price of RM1.99 per litre.

On 16 June, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, had confirmed that the government would proceed with the rationalisation of RON95 petrol subsidies, emphasising its importance for national sustainability.

Meanwhile, Fuziah gave assurance that no traders would be allowed to exploit the RM100 cash aid under SARA by increasing the price of goods.

She added that continuous monitoring and enforcement would be maintained to prevent any abuse or profiteering attempts.

“The SARA assistance is not for general purchases but strictly for essential goods, most of which are price-controlled and can be bought at 4,100 registered premises across the country,” she said. - July 25, 2025
