Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government is developing a more targeted approach to the provision of toll exemptions during festive seasons.
Anwar, who is also the Minister of Finance, explained that, akin to adjustments made for previous subsidies, toll exemptions should be limited to the B40 and M40 groups rather than being extended to all road users.
He noted concerns raised about the current practice of providing exemptions universally, which allows even owners of luxury vehicles such as Rolls-Royces, Mercedes, and Maseratis to benefit. Anwar emphasised the need for a more thorough approach to ensure that lower-income groups receive special consideration.
“This is currently being refined. (Works) Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has only outlined the basic principles, stating that we cannot continue to subsidise everything, such as electricity and fuel,” Anwar said during a press conference held in conjunction with his working visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 Annual Meeting.
Last week, Nanta revealed that 2024 would mark the final year for universal toll exemptions during festive seasons. He added that the Cabinet had decided in a meeting last year to adopt a more targeted approach, with details to be announced soon.
