KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians could soon enjoy significantly cheaper daily travel costs following the launch of Grab Malaysia’s new “Group Ride” feature, which allows multiple passengers heading in similar directions to share a single e-hailing vehicle and split fares.
The feature, officially introduced today, enables passengers to save up to 40% compared to making individual bookings, as Grab pushes to align its services with the government’s call for more efficient and sustainable transport solutions.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke, said the initiative complements the government’s efforts to reduce transport expenses for commuters amid rising living costs and ongoing global fuel supply concerns.
“The MoT welcomes Grab’s new Group Ride feature, aligning with our #TanggungjawabBersama calls for e-hailing operators to expand carpool services and reduce travel expenses for commuters,” he said.
Loke noted that disruptions in global fuel supply caused by the conflict in West Asia had already prompted more Malaysians to turn towards public transportation and alternative mobility options to save money.
He added that services such as Group Ride could help reduce reliance on private vehicles by integrating more effectively with existing public transport systems, including commuter rail networks.
“The MoT supports initiatives that can enhance the rakyat’s well-being through improvements in the transportation ecosystem,” he said.
According to Grab Malaysia, the new feature is designed around three key pillars — affordability, technological efficiency and sustainability, under the theme “Kongsi Perjalanan, Kongsi Tambang”.
Group Ride allows several passengers travelling on similar routes to coordinate trips within a single booking, with the app automatically optimising pick-up and drop-off sequences through Grab’s AI-driven routing system.
Among its key features are flexible routing options, fare-splitting functions and real-time trip coordination.
Passengers can choose between equal fare sharing or proportional payment based on the distance travelled by each rider.
Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor said the company introduced the feature after observing that many users were already informally sharing rides with colleagues, friends and family members to reduce travel costs.
“Our passengers have long been sharing rides to save on fares, especially among colleagues commuting for work or friends going to the same event, which led us to introduce Group Ride to address their pain points,” he said.
Rashid said the feature not only lowers commuting expenses but also improves overall traffic efficiency by reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
“At the same time, it benefits the broader ecosystem by optimising road usage, reducing congestion and supporting a more sustainable urban transport system, including lowering carbon footprint and petrol consumption amid global supply disruption,” he added.
Grab said safety features within the service remain integrated with its existing ecosystem, including the in-app Safety Centre, SOS emergency assistance and trip monitoring technology.
The feature is currently being rolled out in stages to eligible users across Malaysia through the Grab mobile application. - May 8, 2026
