The fire started in an area of vegetation near the ruins of St Anthony’s Chapel on Monday evening, sending a plume of smoke over the city.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) was called to the scene at about 6.50pm.
They urged people to avoid the area and for local residents to keep their windows and doors shut as a precaution.
The SFRS said three appliances were sent to tackle the blaze. Firefighters remain at the scene as of 9pm.

The fire comes as the city feels the heat during the current sunny spell, with a maximum temperature of 25C recorded by the Met Office.
During the Edinburgh Marathon at the weekend, a number of runners were treated for heat exhaustion.
The Scottish Ambulance Service said 16 people were taken to hospital on Sunday.
