“One thing to be grateful for as a Malaysian: kidney stone surgery in a government hospital costs only RM41.”
MALAYSIA has long been celebrated for housing one of the most affordable public healthcare systems in the world, where life-saving surgeries and specialist consultations remain accessible to every citizen regardless of income.
A local Reddit user recently reignited public appreciation for the system after sharing a hospital bill for kidney stone surgery performed at a government facility.
“One thing to be grateful for as a Malaysian: kidney stone surgery in a government hospital costs only RM41, compared to RM18,000 at a private hospital,” she claimed.
The post quickly gained traction, prompting a wave of similar testimonials from Malaysians navigating the country’s dual-tier healthcare landscape.
To highlight the disparity, another user, currently undergoing treatment for kidney stones at a private hospital, provided a breakdown of their insurance-covered expenses.
The total costs were staggering: RM2,300 for the initial consultation and imaging, RM15,000 for the first procedure, RM28,000 for the stone removal, and a further RM5,000 for stent removal.
“Yes, I double-checked the zeroes,” they wrote, underscoring the massive financial gap between the two sectors.

Social media users stated that such comparisons serve as a necessary reminder of the benefits Malaysians often overlook.
“There are a lot of things we take for granted in Malaysia,” one user remarked.
Another contributor shared their experience with rabies vaccinations. While paying approximately USD18 (RM85) per shot at a private clinic overseas, they were shocked to find Malaysian private clinics charging between RM390 and RM450 per dose.
“I went to a government Klinik Kesihatan instead.
“It cost me RM1 for the doctor’s consultation, and RM1 each for the third and fourth shots,” they shared.
For many, the public system remains the first choice for major medical crises.
One Malaysian recounted two significant health scares, one in their youth and another more recently, where they received immediate treatment.
“I didn’t have to think twice before heading to the [government] hospital. I was treated quickly due to the urgency, and it cost me less than RM1,000 both times, including the ward stays,” they said.
