European NATO members would still outmatch Russia in key military categories even without the United States, according to a Greenpeace study published on Tuesday.
The report, titled "Europe Home Alone?," said European NATO states together with Canada spent about $626 billion on defence last year, compared with Russia's $190 billion.
The study found Europe's advantage was particularly pronounced in combat aircraft, with European NATO members and Canada operating 2,215 fighter jets compared with Russia's 1,064.
The same applied to warships, where European NATO members and Canada had 143 vessels against Russia's 34, and artillery systems, with 15,896 compared with Russia's 5,976, according to the report.
The study's authors said that Europe has enormous defence resources, adding that this also applied in the event of a US withdrawal from NATO. However, Europe's security policy was being undermined by what the authors described as an uncoordinated and costly race for defence projects.
