MANILA, Philippines — Rovelyn Baterbonia, mother of the late Rene Baterbonia, has warned the public against individuals allegedly exploiting her son’s passing for personal gain.
In a Facebook post, Rovelyn revealed that she has received messages from people claiming to sell her son’s jersey and solicit donations under false pretenses.
“Good evening. Many have reached my account using our current situation for their own interest, especially when it comes to selling Rene’s jersey or asking for donation money. I am warning everyone to be cautious of these kinds of schemes,” she wrote in Cebuano.
Despite the family’s difficult situation, Rovelyn stressed that she does not want others to fall victim to such acts. She also clarified that she only has one official Facebook account and has not authorized anyone to sell her son’s belongings.
“I don’t want all of you to believe that I am allowing other people to take advantage of this situation. Thank you,” she added.
Rovelyn further emphasized that she has no intention of selling any of Rene’s jerseys or personal items, regardless of the price.
“It does not matter how much the selling price is. I will never sell my son’s jersey and personal belongings. And to those whom Rene personally gave a jersey, please do not sell it. Memories are priceless,” she said.
During Rene’s wake in Agusan del Sur, Rovelyn also expressed disappointment toward some content creators who attended merely to vlog.
“There are people who are just here to vlog my son. I just wish they would show a little respect to our bereaved family,” she said.
