KOTA KINABALU: The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) has renewed calls for reforms to address custodial deaths, highlighting the importance of public trust in law enforcement.

The association said the 2009 death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock and the recent case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir shared striking similarities in how they were categorised.

It noted that despite evidence raised in both cases, no enforcement officer had been held responsible, underscoring what it described as long-standing gaps in accountability.

The group also urged the government to enact an Anti-Torture Act and to strengthen independent oversight mechanisms, stressing that such reforms were overdue and necessary to prevent future incidents.

TBH-ADA announced that it will continue its campaign for justice, including hosting public forums in Sandakan on August 23 and in Tawau on August 24 under the theme “Justice for Zara and Beng Hock.”
