Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA) Sabah said the goal for the plastics industry is to see a world where plastic continues to be used more responsibly and without leaving a plastic footprint on our communities.

MPMA Sabah branch Chairman Liaw Hen Kong said it emphasised its commitment to transitioning towards a Circular Economy, where plastics are used more efficiently, waste is minimised and materials are reused or recycled to reduce environmental impact while sustaining industry growth.

Industry experts at the event shared insights on effective recycling of packaging materials with eco-friendly designs that meet global standards, highlighting that PET is among the most sustainable packaging materials and that plastics can be recycled infinitely through innovation and technological improvements.

MPMA outlined its multi-pronged approach focusing on advocacy with policymakers for science-based regulations, capacity building through training sessions for sustainable manufacturing and education outreach to schools and communities about proper waste separation and recycling.

For Sabah specifically, MPMA called for policies that recognise the State’s unique challenges, including remote areas with limited recycling access and stronger government support to improve local collection and recycling infrastructure.

The association also sees opportunities to collaborate with local technical colleges and universities to develop expertise in green plastics technologies.

During the event, MPMA member Life Water Berhad recognised five outstanding green partners for their environmental initiatives, including the Department of Education Sabah for its “Air Ku Hidup Ku” programme reaching 88 schools and Kota Kinabalu City Hall for supporting upcycling projects like a giant Christmas tree made from 870 recycled plastic bottles.

Looking ahead, MPMA plans to launch several initiatives including a Design for Plastics Circularity Challenge for university students and a nationwide “Don’t Be a Litterbug” campaign across all Malaysian branches to promote the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
