I recently celebrated my 77th birthday. Looking back across the decades, I can honestly say that life has been extraordinarily kind to me. Like anyone else, I’ve weathered my share of disappointments, setbacks, and heartaches. But whenever I weigh those heavy moments against the steady shower of blessings I’ve received, gratitude wins every single time.
If one guiding principle has anchored my life, it is what I call an attitude of gratitude.
Every morning when I open my eyes, I quietly whisper to myself: "I am still alive and kicking." At 77, every new sunrise is an unearned gift—never a guarantee, and never something to take for granted. Over the years, I’ve tasted enough of life’s salt to realise that ageing isn’t about counting the years on a calendar; it’s about infusing the years we have left with meaning, joy, and purpose.

Walking Beside Father Time
Of course, my body doesn't hesitate to remind me that it’s no longer 27. My heart plays to its own irregular rhythm. Daily medication is part of my routine. My lower back protests if I sit too long, and stiff joints are regular morning visitors. But I’ve chosen to view these physical hiccups not as life-defining tragedies, but simply as unwelcome travel companions on the road. We can either fight the march of time, or we can walk beside it with grace.
One realisation has brought me immense comfort: we are never walking alone.
Every senior you pass carries an invisible burden. Some contend with diabetes, arthritis, or kidney disease. Others quietly navigate dimming eyesight, limited mobility, loneliness, or anxiety. We exchange warm smiles on our morning walks, but behind every smile lies a private story known only to the person carrying it.
If you are facing your own trials today, take heart: you are not isolated. We are all fellow travellers navigating the exact same road.

Movement is Medicine
Instead of asking, "Why me?", I try to frame a far better question each morning: "How can I make today a good day?"
For me, the answer always begins with movement.
On almost any given morning, you will find me walking through Taman Tun Dr Ismail Park or trekking the trails of Bukit Kiara. Exercise has become my favourite medicine. There is no pill in the world that can replicate what regular movement does for the human body, mind, and spirit. A good walk clears the mental fog, lifts the spirit, and reminds me how fortunate I am to simply be able to put one foot in front of the other. While we still can, let us cherish these simple, powerful pleasures.
Keeping the mind active is just as vital. I continue reading and writing to stay sharp, but recently, I unlocked a new passion: producing short video summaries of the events I attend. My friends now jokingly ensure I’m on every guest list because they know I’ll preserve our precious memories! Age should never freeze our curiosity. Mastering a new skill gives us a fresh reason to look forward to tomorrow.
The Power of Togetherness
Equally essential are the people who fill our days. I deeply treasure time spent with my family, my nine siblings, and my dear friends at the Royal Selangor Club. Whether it’s alumni gatherings, chatting over coffee, or staying active in communities like SeniorsAloud and Happy and Healthy, these connection points remind me that we are never too old to build new memories, share a warm laugh, or lift each other up.
Growing older is infinitely easier—and far more joyful—when we walk the road together.
The Two Suitcases
Emotionally, aging presents a unique test. I often picture us carrying two heavy suitcases through life.
- The First Suitcase is crammed with past hurts, unresolved anger, and lingering regrets.
- The Second Suitcase is packed with worries about tomorrow—our health, our finances, and our independence.
As the years roll on, these suitcases grow heavier and heavier. Whenever I catch myself clutching them, I make a conscious choice to set them down. I choose to forgive. I choose to let go. I choose to live right here in the present—because yesterday cannot be rewritten, and tomorrow hasn't arrived. Each time we lighten those emotional burdens, our hearts instantly feel lighter too.
A Legacy of Love and Service
Gratitude costs absolutely nothing, yet it pays life's richest dividends. If I can breathe comfortably, enjoy breakfast with good friends, or watch my grandchildren laugh, I count myself among the wealthy. Millions of people would gladly trade places with us for a day like that.
Giving back has enriched my life in ways I never anticipated. Whether volunteering at a soup kitchen, serving at my place of worship, helping to protect Bukit Kiara, or performing sewa—selfless service without expecting anything in return—I’ve learned that any act of kindness transforms when you add one essential ingredient: love. Love turns an ordinary task into an extraordinary blessing.
A quote I stumbled upon years ago still echoes in my mind:
"Extending one hand to help another has far more value than joining two hands in prayer."
As seniors, our greatest legacy won't be the material wealth we leave behind, but the values we pass down and the love we leave in people's hearts. I tell my wife, Rina, how deeply she means to me every single day. I never miss an opportunity to tell my siblings and my grandchildren how much light they bring into my world. Why wait until a voice is gone before telling someone they are cherished?

Living One Day at a Time
I choose to take life one day at a time. I smile often. I laugh at myself. I stay curious. I keep moving. And most importantly, I continue to pray—holding fast to the belief that if we make time for God, God will always have time for us.
Looking back, I couldn't ask life for much more. It has already been far more generous to me than I deserve. Whatever time remains is simply another opportunity to count my blessings and leave the world a little brighter than I found it.
That, to me, is the real secret of aging well: not merely adding years to life, but adding gratitude, purpose, hope, and love to every year we are blessed to live.
