Kota Kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) does not see any need to hold the State Election (PRN) earlier than the scheduled date of October 2025.

GRS Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the GRS-Pakatan Harapan (PH) State Government still has about two years to go, so this period will be used to continue the State’s development agenda and resolve people’s issues such as water and electricity supplies.

“We still have a year and nine months, there is still time for us to do what we have planned.

“If the election is early, how do we want to solve the problem that has been going on for so long,” he said when met after the Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew’s luncheon with the media, here, on Wednesday.

He said even though Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has stated the need to be prepared, there is still more than a year to go.

At the moment, the party that really wants the election to be held early is the opposition, he said, adding that now and then the opposition is spreading slander as if hinting that the election is near.

“The Chief Minister often states that we will continue to work, indeed the election will be held, but we do not know when. What is certain is that there will be an election in October next year.

“The question is, what is the reason for us to hold election this year? The Yang di-Pertuan Agong had previously given advice, if you want to politic, wait another five years.

“The five-year period (for GRS) is not over yet so why do we have to talk about politics? We want to focus on development.

“Many issues such as water and electricity have not been resolved in the past. At least the Government is now trying to solve these problems, so give us time,” said Joniston.

The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Information Chief said based on sentiment at the grassroots, support for GRS is strong.

“We declare that we are strong, not just talk. The Chief Minister always said, that whatever we do, we should not just listen, but we need to see and feel.

“The Government is now focusing so that the people can see and feel what changes we can make in Sabah,” he said.
