GT Capital: JCRA rating to widen funding access

GT Capital Holdings Inc. on Tuesday expects broadened access to Japanese capital markets after receiving its first long-term issuer credit rating from the Japan Credit Rating Agency (JCR).

The Ty family-led conglomerate was assigned a foreign currency long-term issuer rating of “A-” with a stable outlook, an investment-grade rating affirming its strong credit profile.

Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer George Uy-Tioco Jr. welcomed the JCR rating, saying it reflected the group’s “resilience, sound fiscal position, and strong balance sheet.”

“As a conglomerate with longstanding global partnerships, GT Capital has cultivated enduring relationships with leading Japanese companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation, Nomura Real Estate, ORIX Metro, and Mitsui & Co., among others,” he said in a disclosure.

“This rating further diversifies our funding sources and enhances our access to the Japanese financial markets,” Uy-Tioco said.

JCR said the rating reflected GT Capital’s “strong business foundation, stable cash flow generated by a well-balanced portfolio, and a solid financial base.”

The Japanese credit rating agency also cited the group’s financial services and automotive businesses, highlighting the market positions of GT Capital subsidiaries Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. (Metrobank), Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMP), GT Capital Auto and Mobility Holdings Inc., and Toyota Financial Services Philippines Corp.

“In 2026, GT Capital became one of only seven Philippine institutions — including the Republic of the Philippines — to receive a credit rating from JCR,” the company said, noting that this marked a significant milestone in its growth story.

The conglomerate’s portfolio spans banking, automotive, property, insurance and infrastructure through several subsidiaries led by Metrobank, TMP, Federal Land Inc., AXA Philippines, and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.

GT Capital shares on Tuesday slipped P1.00, or 0.22 percent, to close at P464.00 each amid a 0.16 percent downturn for the benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index.
