A 19-YEAR-OLD Orang Asli youth suffered injuries to his right leg and left arm after being attacked by a bear while foraging in the forest near Kampung Kuala Yai, Pos Tohoi on Monday.

Asmir Alang was reportedly in the forest with five friends around 1 p.m. when the group unexpectedly encountered two bears.

The sudden appearance of the animals caused Asmir to panic and climb a tree in an attempt to escape.

Deputy Superintendent Azlan Che Abdullah, Deputy Chief of Gua Musang Police District, said authorities received a report of the incident at 9.58 p.m. on the same day.

“Initial investigations indicate that the victim and his five friends had entered the forest near Kampung Kuala Yai in Pos Tohoi to search for medicinal herbs,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

“While they were looking for a place to rest, two bears appeared. The victim panicked and climbed a tree.”

While attempting to climb, one of the bears bit Asmir on his right leg and left hand. His friends intervened by striking the bear, prompting both animals to flee the scene.

Azlan confirmed that Asmir was subsequently transported to Gua Musang Hospital for further medical treatment. Authorities have not reported any ongoing threats, but the incident highlights the risks of wildlife encounters in the area. - February 24, 2026
