Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki insisted that investigators had complied fully with the law during the recent raid on businessman Albert Tei’s home, stressing that multiple video recordings were secured to counter allegations of wrongdoing by enforcement officers.

Speaking at a press conference in Putrajaya, Azam outlined that bodycam footage, officer-recorded videos, and CCTV recordings from the residence were all obtained and handed to the forensic unit as part of the investigation. He maintained that these materials were collected under lawful procedures and were intended to provide a clear picture of what took place during the operation.

Azam addressed claims made by Tei’s legal representatives, including accusations that home CCTV footage had been seized unlawfully. He noted that the legality of such claims would be left for the lawyers to argue, but emphasised that MACC viewed the actions of its team as being fully aligned with existing regulations and standard operating protocols. According to him, investigators are permitted to retrieve any material deemed relevant to their work, and the raid met those conditions.

He also rejected allegations that an MACC officer had pointed a firearm at Tei during his arrest last Friday. The claim, reportedly raised by Tei’s wife, has since been formally referred to the police. Azam said a report was lodged and that MACC had surrendered all recorded evidence for external review, adding that officers involved had been called in to assist investigators. He described the commission’s stance as entirely transparent and reiterated that the agency had “nothing to hide.”

The incident stems from Tei’s brief arrest on November 28, carried out jointly by MACC and the police, during which he was released mere minutes later. Tei’s lawyer, Zaid Malek, had earlier alleged that enforcement officers forcibly entered the residence before detaining his client.

The raid came shortly after MACC announced an immediate probe into allegations that Tei had offered bribes to the former senior political secretary to the prime minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. With public scrutiny intensifying, MACC’s leadership now finds itself working to dispel suggestions of procedural misconduct while the broader investigation into Tei continues.
