Tension briefly gripped the heart of Washington, D.C. after U.S. Secret Service agents found themselves in a dangerous face-off with an armed individual just steps away from the White House.
The incident unfolded on Monday afternoon, when officers on patrol spotted a man behaving suspiciously near the outer perimeter, not far from the Washington Monument. According to officials, the individual appeared to be carrying a firearm, prompting agents to move in for further inspection.
What followed quickly escalated.
As officers approached, the suspect reportedly fled on foot before turning back and firing shots in their direction. Secret Service personnel responded immediately, returning fire and hitting the individual.
The suspect was later taken to hospital with injuries, though authorities have not publicly disclosed his condition. In the chaos, a young bystander was also struck during the exchange, but early reports indicate the injuries were not life-threatening.
The sudden outbreak of violence triggered a temporary lockdown at the White House, with security protocols swiftly activated as a precaution. Journalists and staff within the compound were moved to secure areas while law enforcement worked to contain the situation.
Interestingly, the confrontation occurred shortly after a motorcade carrying U.S. Vice President JD Vance had passed through the vicinity. However, officials were quick to clarify that there is no indication the suspect was targeting the motorcade or any specific individual.
Authorities also confirmed that the suspect never breached the White House grounds, though the proximity of the incident was enough to raise fresh concerns about security in one of the most heavily guarded areas in the world.
Investigators have since recovered a weapon from the scene and are now working to piece together the suspect’s motives. At this stage, no clear link has been established between the incident and any broader threat.
The episode comes at a time of heightened alert in Washington, following recent security scares in the capital, adding to the sense of unease surrounding public safety in high-profile zones.
For now, officials say the situation is under control, but the investigation remains ongoing.
