SOUNDS resembling gunfire heard in the early hours of Thursday in Melaka Raya are believed to have come from shots fired during a confrontation outside an entertainment outlet in the area.
The incident is understood to have occurred at about 4am, when a fight broke out between two individuals, and one of them allegedly discharged a firearm.
According to a witness, the noises were initially dismissed as part of a minor disturbance or loud music from nearby premises.
“I heard what sounded like two gunshots at around 4am but did not pay much attention to it.
“This morning at about 6am, I saw several police officers with K9 dogs arrive and collect two bullet casings in front of the entertainment outlet,” the witness said.
A cleaning worker at the scene said the altercation also resulted in the windscreen of a Perodua Myvi being shattered before one of the individuals fired the shots.
However, the worker said the gunfire was believed not to have hit any target, and no injuries were reported.
A hotel employee from a nearby property said they only became aware of the incident after police cordoned off the road at the location at around 7am.
As of publication, Sinar Harian was seeking confirmation and further details from Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit regarding the incident. - January 8, 2025
