The Tarn Taran police arrested Gurdaspur SDM Anupreet Kaur Randhawa early on Saturday morning from her official residence in a case relating to alleged bungling of funds.
A 2012-batch PCS officer, she was also holding the additional charge of head of the Municipal Committee (MC).
Randhawa was arrested in a case related to alleged bungling of funds during land acquisition for National Highway 54, when she was posted as SDM, Patti. The case involves alleged irregularities worth Rs 1.63 crore, although sources claim the amount may be much higher.
On Saturday morning, the SDM was caught unawares when the police entered her official residence, House No. 10, Jail Road. She is said to have resisted the police action for some time before the cops eventually managed to take her into custody.
By virtue of being the SDM, she remained the Competent Authority Land Acquisition (CALA) from early 2018 till February 2019. During this period, she is alleged to have misused her powers and deposited money into the accounts of her relatives without verifying revenue records, thereby causing losses to the state exchequer.
Her tenure in Gurdaspur as SDM has remained controversial. During elections for the Gurdaspur Block Samiti and Zila Parishad, she had rejected nomination papers of rival parties of AAP.
