In a bid to prevent a repeat of the annual “Gurujam” during the monsoon season, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has set up a 24×7 Flood Control Office and announced a multi-agency response mechanism to tackle waterlogging across the city.
The authority will also deploy a dedicated inter-departmental anti-waterlogging task force equipped with emergency machinery and manpower to ensure smooth movement of traffic during heavy rainfall.
The newly established Flood Control Office will function as the central coordination hub for monsoon management, handling real-time rainfall monitoring, deployment of resources and public grievances round the clock.
“The Flood Control Office will ensure swift response and effective management of waterlogging situations. Necessary manpower, machinery, and support systems will be put in place to provide immediate assistance to residents and ensure smooth movement on city roads during adverse weather,” said GMDA CEO PC Meena.
As part of the preparedness plan, the GMDA is deploying mobile tractor-mounted pump sets, suction tankers and high-capacity DG sets at vulnerable points across the city. Dedicated teams have also been assigned for regular cleaning of road gullies and master drains to prevent choking of the drainage network.
“Special focus is being laid on ensuring that drainage infrastructure remains free from silt, debris, and other obstructions,” Meena said, adding that JCB machines and labour teams were being stationed at identified hotspots for emergency desilting operations.
The authority will also conduct mock drills at major underpasses beginning May 15. In coordination with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and DLF, the GMDA will test pumping machinery and drainage sumps using fire tenders to simulate heavy inflow conditions.
The first phase of the drill will cover Ambience Mall, Subhash Chowk and Shankar Chowk on May 15, while exercises at IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower, Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk will be held between May 18 and 21. The drills will later be extended to sectors 102, 104 and 113.
Officials said the advance testing of flood response systems and drainage infrastructure was aimed at minimising inconvenience to commuters and residents during the monsoon season.
