The locally assembled Wey G9 is already being exported from Malaysia to Thailand, making it both a domestic CKD model and a regional export product.

GWM MALAYSIA is expanding its local assembly programme, confirming that both the upcoming Ora 5 HEV and Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV will be assembled locally (CKD) in Malaysia.

The announcement was made at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026, where GWM is showcasing the two upcoming models alongside the locally assembled Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV.

More significantly, GWM is positioning Malaysia as an increasingly important part of its wider Asean manufacturing network.

The locally assembled Wey G9 is already being exported from Malaysia to Thailand, making it both a domestic CKD model and a regional export product.

According to GWM, the three models shown at GATE represent its current and future local assembly strategy: one existing CKD model in the Wey G9, together with two upcoming locally assembled models in the Ora 5 HEV and Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV.

The Ora 5 HEV has already been previewed several times in Malaysia and is expected to launch in the second half of 2026.

Malaysia will receive the hybrid version rather than the EV offered in some markets. Its Hi2 powertrain combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor integrated into a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

Combined output is 223PS and 476Nm, with 0-100 km/h taking 7.7 seconds. GWM has previously quoted fuel consumption of 4.4 litres per 100km and a combined driving range of more than 1,100km.

The Haval H7 Hi4 PHEV, meanwhile, is expected to arrive in Malaysia in early 2027. Its plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with front and rear electric motors for a combined 370PS and 750Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds.

A 27.54kWh LFP battery provides up to 115km of WLTP electric range, while total combined range is claimed to exceed 1,000km.

Beyond the vehicles themselves, GWM is also using GATE 2026 to showcase its Hi2 and Hi4 hybrid technologies, together with hydrogen technologies developed by FTXT.

The company says the display is intended to encourage discussions around future new-energy technologies and their possible role in Malaysia.

Elsewhere in its Malaysian line-up, GWM has also introduced the 2026 Tank 500 HEV, which gains expanded smartphone connectivity through the GWM Intelligent Application.

Owners can now remotely start or stop the engine, control or schedule the air-conditioning, activate the air purifier and seat ventilation, lock or unlock the doors, and close the windows and sunroof.

The app also provides remote access to information including fuel level, remaining driving range, mileage, tyre pressures and temperatures, as well as the status of the doors, windows, sunroof and selected cabin functions.

Location-based functions include Find My Vehicle, live vehicle location and geofencing, which can alert the owner if the Tank 500 leaves a predefined area.

Other notifications cover open doors or windows, low fuel, low 12V battery level and abnormal tyre pressure or temperature. Vehicle access can also be shared with another user.

Mechanically, the 2026 Tank 500 HEV retains its existing 2.0-litre turbo hybrid powertrain. The updated model is now available at selected GWM dealerships nationwide.
