Great Wall Motors has officially unveiled the Tank 700 Hi4-Z, a rugged plug-in hybrid SUV.

The GWM Tank 700 Hi4-Z has made its official debut in China, introducing a high-performance alternative to the existing Hi4-T option, which has a 3.0L V6 turbocharged petrol engine. While the vehicle retains the muscular, “hardcore” architecture that has defined the Tank series, this new variant introduces subtle aesthetic refinements and a significant leap in battery technology.

Rugged Design and Integrated Intelligence

The exterior of the Tank 700 Hi4-Z features minor optimizations designed to enhance its aggressive presence. The front fascia is characterized by a ventilated hood and a three-section bumper layout accented by a front lip spoiler. While much of the design language carries over from the Hi4-T, the Hi4-Z is distinguished by a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, signaling the inclusion of advanced driver-assistance capabilities.

Measuring 5,105 mm in length with a 3,000 mm wheelbase, the SUV maintains its imposing road presence. Customization remains a core appeal, with owners able to choose between new 20-inch and 21-inch wheel designs, optional gold body emblems, and various bumper trim pieces. The rear remains functional and iconic, featuring a horizontally opening tailgate and a proudly displayed spare tyre.

The Hi4-Z Powertrain: Efficiency Meets Utility

Under the hood, the Tank 700 Hi4-Z is powered by a 2.0T plug-in hybrid system. The internal combustion engine delivers a maximum output of 185 kW (248 hp), but the real headline is the energy storage. Equipped with a substantial 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, the Hi4-Z achieves a pure electric range of 190 km (CLTC).

This electrified setup doesn’t just benefit urban commuting; it maintains the vehicle’s utility for outdoor adventures. The Tank 700 Hi4-Z boasts a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg (750 kg unbraked), ensuring it remains a capable workhorse. Despite its size and power, the hybrid system helps the vehicle maintain a combined fuel consumption of 8.45L/100km.

A Strategic Expansion

The debut follows a social media teaser from Great Wall Motor Chairman Wei Jianjun, which hinted at the model’s silhouette just days prior. By launching the Hi4-Z, GWM is providing a higher-range option for enthusiasts who want the durability of a traditional off-roader without the limitations of a smaller battery.
