According to Sin Chew Daily News, a fitness coach from Taiwan who was exercising at a gym while recording herself with her phone shared a complaint on the famous social media platform, Threads. Alongside a selfie showing her tying up her hair uploaded, she included a caption claiming that a man standing nearby had been watching her and making her feel uncomfortable. She questioned why the man was looking in her direction, suggesting that his attention was unwelcome. The post quickly gained traction online, but the reaction was far from what she may have expected.
Rather than offering support, many commenters criticized her perspective. Numerous users pointed out that she had been filming herself throughout her workout in a public space, making it natural for people nearby to occasionally glance in her direction. They argued that recording videos and taking selfies in a busy gym would inevitably attract attention and that not every look should be interpreted as inappropriate behavior.
As the discussion intensified, an unexpected twist added fuel to the controversy. A male netizen appeared in the comments section claiming to be the very person she had accused of staring. His response immediately caught the attention of thousands. According to the commenter, he had only turned his head because he noticed an unpleasant smell. In a blunt and highly controversial remark, he claimed that was the real reason he looked in her direction.
The comment quickly went viral, attracting tens of thousands of likes and shares. Social media users flooded the thread with jokes and memes, describing the exchange as one of the most embarrassing online reversals they had seen in recent memory. With criticism mounting and the comments section becoming increasingly hostile, the fitness coach eventually removed the original post. Screenshots of the incident, however, had already spread across social media platforms, ensuring that the discussion continued long after the deletion.

Many netizens used the incident as a cautionary example, joking that people should keep their distance whenever they encounter someone recording themselves at the gym to avoid becoming the next target of an online call-out.
The issue didn't only widespread among Taiwanese netizens, but also went viral across the Malaysian circle posted on Facebook with many netizens having similar views. A netizen even said, “Many gym-goers spend more time taking selfies than exercising and then assume others are paying attention to them. If you're at the gym, focus on your workout rather than occupying equipment for extended periods while filming or taking photos. Most people aren't watching out of interest, they're simply waiting for the equipment to become available. If you're there to exercise, do so; otherwise, don't create unnecessary conflict”.
Another Malaysian netizen jokingly commented, “Women shouldn’t be overly sensitive; most men go to the gym focusing on other men rather than paying attention to women”.
