
Kota Kinabalu: A 47-year-old man was jailed seven years and ordered given three strokes of the cane for taking syabu repeatedly.
Sessions Court Judge Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim meted out the sentence to Eddy James, after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against Eddy.
Eddy was found guilty of taking the drug at 12.20pm on Dec 28, 2023 after his urine tested positive at the police station here.

The offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) and punishable under Section 39C(1) of the DDA provides for a jail term of between five and seven years and whipping, on conviction.
The court ordered Eddy to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest and place under police supervision for three years after completing the jail sentence.
The prosecution called five witnesses while the defence had only one during the hearing.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim conducted the prosecution while Eddy was represented by counsel Michelle Usman.
Meanwhile, three illegal immigrants were jailed four months each for entering the State illegally.
Suhardi Tahang, Khalid Mastoki and Hud Yatin pleaded guilty separately before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, to the charge against them.
They were arrested in Tambunan on May 15 this year after failing to produce identification documents to the immigration personnel who carried out an operation in the area.
After serving the jail sentence, the illegal immigrants were ordered referred to the Immigration Department for deportation.
